Our last intern we would like to introduce is Hannah Surwillo.  She is a junior at Miami University with a major in Health Promotions and a minor in Nutrition.  She is originally from California.

What sparked your interest in nutrition?

"I have always found the nutritional sciences to be fascinating. As I have continued to study the subject and apply it to my own life, I am able to see, first hand, the impact nutrition can have on one’s life. My interest in nutrition really stems from my own experiences and struggles with finding the balance of a healthy life style at all ages and stages."

How do you keep fit and healthy?

"I keep fit and healthy by mixing up my health routines and keeping it exciting. Once I am tired of a particular type of exercise or activity I try something new! I maintain healthy eating habits by finding creative way to eat my fruits and vegetables everyday! Sometimes this includes blending vegetables into my morning smoothies. Most importantly I aim to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water each day. Water is key!"

Do you have any favorite cookbooks and/or books relating to health?

"I recently discovered the book 5 A Day: The Better Health Cookbook, and I have loved the fresh and appetizing recipes within it. In addition to reading cookbooks, I am always tearing out articles and recipes from magazines. Some of my favorite magazines include Woman’s Health and Health. "

What is your favorite meal or food?

"My favorite meal includes any type of fresh, grilled seafood, but my guilty pleasure is, and will always be, Kraft Mac n’ Cheese."

Our next intern we would like to introduce is Lindsay Tyree.  She is a sophomore Nutrition major at Miami University.  She is originally from Missouri.

What sparked your interest in nutrition?

"My interested sparked with nutrition at a younger age.  I was dancer and wanted to stay healthy. I learned that I was interested in figuring what was nutritious to my body. I grew up with my mother cooking great meals in my home and I would ask her questions like, “is this good for me”, or “what are you making for dinner tonight, is it healthy?”  Then my interest in nutrition began."

How do you keep fit and healthy?

"I try to keep conscious about staying fit and healthy.  In order to feel good about my health I try to incorporate good habits in my every day life.  For instance, I will think about healthy foods to add to my meals, especially fruit because it is my favorite.  Then I do not force myself to workout, but I try to workout when I feel motivated usually three to five times a week with either more vigorous workouts less times a week, or more relaxed workouts more frequent throughout the week."

Do you have a favorite cookbook or book relating to health?

I" do not own any cookbooks yet.  However, my favorite cookbook is my Mother’s cookbook.  She has collected many recipes over the years that I love and remind me of home.  Also, all of my pins from pinterest is my second favorite place to find new recipes.  I am able to find recipes that can be so healthy and look very delicious at the same time."

What is your favorite meal or food?

"I love food too much, so it is hard to pick my favorite food.  Some of my favorites are fresh pizza like margarita with fresh hand made crust and fresh ingredients.  I love breakfast, so apple cinnamon pancakes is another favorite that I look forward to eating in the morning once in awhile. "

Kayla Petersen is our new intern.  She is a sophomore Nutrition Major with a Dietetics concentration at Miami University.  She is originally from Pennsylvania.

What sparked your interest in nutrition?

"I would have to say the atmosphere and lifestyle of the profession is what sparked my interest in nutrition. Nutrition isn’t just a job but a complete lifestyle where I take care of myself and other people. Having the opportunity to encourage people in positive ways to help motivate them to choose a healthy lifestyle, that not only improves their self-image, but also in relationships is extremely rewarding. Some people might say “A dietitian is useless because I could find that information online”, but being a dietitian is so much more than that. It’s science, psychology, art, culinary, and medical. It’s so much fun to explore all the different options and areas throughout the profession."

How do you keep fit and healthy?

"One of the many ways that I keep fit and healthy is by adventuring outdoors. After a long hike up a mountain, I always feel extremely refreshed and accomplished. I’m a huge goal setter so when it comes to exercise, I always try to make it fun and challenging. I also LOVE vegetables, and don’t roll your eyes at me just yet because the runner up to that is pizza and ice cream! The main thing I find important is that I love eating what makes me feel great. Once I’m full I stop and I feel like I can conquer the world!"

Do you have a favorite cookbook and or book relating to health?

"If Pinterest were a cookbook, that’s definitely what my favorite book would be! That’s where art and creativity play a huge role in why I want to go into dietetics. Pinterest is loaded with fun little ideas to play around with and experiment! If you don’t know what to do with that extra can of soup, I bet pinterest has an answer to your problem! It’s all about having fun, trying new things, and creating a masterpiece of colors and shapes that are mouthwateringly DELICIOUS!"

What is your favorite meal or food?

"As I said, I’m a huge fan of my veggies! But I think the main reason for this is because I use them in so many different ways. Maybe on Monday I feel like making a margarita pizza with spinach, tomatoes and cheese. But then on Tuesday I feel like having a black bean burrito that I can load that up with peppers, spinach, tomatoes, corn, onions, and anything else I would want to throw in! I could even whip up some yummy roasted cauliflower tots as a side! The options are limitless!"

Happy 2015!
